International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI) Admission For Master of Law (LL.M) and Master of Humanities (M.Hum)


The International Maritime Law Institute is inviting applications from Candidates in Nigeria for admission to pursue the program of Master of Law (LL.M) and Master of Humanities (M.Hum) at the Institute in Libya for the year 2019/2020 academic session. The program is scheduled to hold from October, 2019 to June, 2020.

School Profile

The IMO International Maritime Law Institute is a globally recognized study center established for the training of specialists in international maritime law. The Institute gives special emphasis to International Maritime Organization regulations. IMLI offers qualified candidates, particularly from developing countries, with high-level facilities for advanced training, study and research in the discipline of international maritime law.

Different programs can be offered at IMLI ranging from short courses to a Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in International Maritime Law. The main aim of the programs is to produce legal advisers in relevant areas of international maritime law. These laws include sea, marine, environmental and shipping laws.

IMLI provides a unique opportunities for students to understand the international nature of maritime law in a multicultural environment under the watch of best professors and lecturers.

1. Master of Laws (LL.M.)

International Maritime Law Institute provides specialized post-graduate course that are awarded the degree of Master of Laws (LL.M.) in International Maritime Law. The program consists of post-graduate education in all areas of international maritime law which include sea, marine, environmental and shipping laws. These courses are mainly addressed to lawyers, legal advisers, judges and legal draftsmen and women whose practice covers maritime issues and are seeking specialization in these fields.

The program is as well open to law graduates of any country who intend to pursue a legal career in the field of maritime law be it in the public or private enterprises, whether in academia, administration or practice.

Though the program is most suitable for candidates from developing countries. It now covers versatile curriculum addressing the needs of students from countries around the world. “The rule of international maritime law” is what the course focuses on.

The Institute's resident academic staff as well as eminent visiting fellows who are experts and  practitioners and academics of international repute in various fields of maritime law, delivers the teachings. The study, including teaching as well as the writing of examinations, dissertations and projects, is in the English language to accommodate the greater public.

2. Master of Humanities (M.HUM.)

The IMLI offers a program leading to the award of degree of Master of Humanities (M.HUM.) in International Maritime Legislation. The program will be open to candidates who are undergraduates in a recognized university or other academic institution related to the discipline of international maritime law.

The M.Hum. program rose from the need of most countries to have trained specialists in international maritime law who would help in effective discharge of their obligations and make sure that countries legislation meets the international standards accepted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and other international organizations in this regard.

How to Apply

The application forms is required to be accompanied by:
  • The attached nomination form which must be duly completed, signed stamped by the nominating authority;
  • Copies of the candidates’ University degrees officially authenticated by the University concerned;
  • A copy of the certificates of proficient in English held by the candidates;
  • The attached medical report from duly completed by a registered Government Medical Practitioner;
  • An attached letters of reference covering the candidates’ ability to undertake the LL.M program, referees are persons who are not related to the candidates and who are familiar with the candidates’ character and qualifications. Referees should be used, where possible, attached reference form;
  • A letter of intent written by the candidates and stating the candidates’ may use the attached motivation forms;
  • Where financial assistance is requested, proof of payment of the fellowship fee;
  • Where financial aid is requested, the attached fellowship application form duly completed and signed by the candidates and the Ministry authority and
  • Proof of payment of the application and processing fee of £150.

Application Deadline/Closing Date

Applications for the academic year 2019-2020 are now open and the deadline for application is 30 March 2019.

The nomination form, application form and fellowship form, where applicable, should reach the Institute by 30 March 2019 for the purpose of timely selection and notification of candidates.
